Hanzi Grove

About Hanzi Grove

Hanzi Grove helps English-speaking learners understand Chinese characters instead of memorising random shapes. Every HSK word on the site can be split into its parts, then into smaller parts, down to the strokes, with pinyin, meaning and example sentences at every step.

The site is made by the team behind the Hanzi Grove app for Android (launching soon on Google Play) and the YouTube channel Mandarin Point.

Where the data comes from

Vocabulary follows the 2021 Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards (GF0025-2021) and the older 2015 HSK lists. Character shapes and stroke data come from open datasets, and English meanings start from CC-CEDICT and are edited for learners. See Credits for details and licences.
